  • Michael Adrian Bussey
    Independent Chairman and Non-Executive Director

    Michael Bussey joined HSBC in 1980 as an international executive and spent over twenty years as an expatriate in a variety of senior roles. During that period he lived and worked in Asia, the Middle East, Africa, North America and the UK. His last role with HSBC was CEO HSBC Private Banking EMEA. From 2001, Michael decided to remain in UK and specialise in Private Banking and Wealth Management. After a short period with Schroders, he was appointed CEO Private Banking and Trust at NM Rothschild. His last executive role was as CEO of Arbuthnot Latham & Co. In 2011 Michael began his “portfolio” career by chairing UK Wealth Management which was a Leeds based IFA owned by Duke Street Capital. A successful exit was achieved in 2014 by way of a trade sale. He is chairman of Gentoo Genie Ltd, an award winning FCA regulated business which has created a new financing structure for first time home buyers, and a chairman and non-executive director of Credit Suisse (UK) Ltd, where he also chairs the Remuneration and Nominations Committee.

  • Michael Walker
    Independent Non-Executive Director

    Michael Walker spent the majority of his executive career with Prudential Financial Inc, one of the largest financial institutions in the United States and a major provider of financial services to the international marketplace. In his capacity as Chief Executive Officer of the group’s international banking operations, based in London, he was responsible for the provision of products and services to super affluent and high-net worth clients located in Europe, Asia, Middle East and Latin America. In 2006, Michael was appointed specialist adviser to the UK Financial Services Authority and was subsequently appointed senior adviser to the UK Financial Conduct Authority following the UK regulatory reorganisation in 2012. He also provides specialist advisory and training services to other European regulators including the UK Prudential Regulatory Authority and the European Securities and Markets Authority in Paris. Michael is currently a non-executive director of Peel Hunt LLP, a UK corporate advisory business and an executive director of Acuity 4 Ltd, a UK consultancy specialising in the provision of governance and conduct advisory services to the financial services sector. Additionally, he provides specialist advisory services to European private banks and wealth management institutions. He is a Fellow of both the Chartered Institute of Bankers and the Royal Society of Arts, a past member of the British Bankers Association Council and a past member of various Bank of England standing committees.

  • John Zarb
    Independent Non-Executive Director

    John Zarb retired from his role as partner at PwC at the end of 2014 after a career spanning over 40 years spent within the audit and advisory practices of the firm. He is a past president of the Malta Institute of Accountants, and served for a number of years on the Accountancy Board and as Malta’s representative on the EU Accounting Regulatory Committee. John is currently the chairman of PG plc, a board member and chairman of the audit committee of Tumas Investments plc and a director of Foster Clark Products Limited. He joined the board of MeDirect as an independent non-executive director and was elected as chairman of the Audit Committee on 17 July 2017.

  • Benjamin Hollowood
    Non-Executive Director

    Benjamin Hollowood is an investment director at AnaCap Financial Partners LLP, a European private equity firm specialising in financial services, where he is the part of the Business Services team responsible for the development of AnaCap’s portfolio company investments. Prior to joining AnaCap, Benjamin worked as a principal at Bain Company where he led a broad range of assignments across the financial service sector, and advised senior management teams across Europe, United States and Africa on strategy, M&A, operational and organisational issues. Benjamin holds a MA in Neuroscience from the University of Cambridge.

  • Dominic Wallace
    Non-Executive Director

    Dominic Wallace has more than 25 years' experience in the financial sector, gained at a number of major international institutions including Andersen Consulting (now Accenture), JP Morgan and Citigroup, where he spent 13 years and was a Managing Director from 2003 onwards. There he held a number of senior Risk Management positions: most recently he was global head of interest rate, liquidity, currency and equity risk for Citigroup's institutional business, and his previous roles had included responsibility for pricing risk and for new product approval. He has a MA from Cambridge University and a DPhil from Oxford University, both in theoretical physics.

  • Philippe Delva
    Interim Group Chief Executive Officer

    Philippe Delva joined Generale Bank in Brussels in 1983 as a university trainee, and spent the consecutive years in various responsibilities. After his trainee-ship, he became a regional manager, and after some years was head of Corporate in Bruges. He was then an expatriate for over 4 years in Hong Kong as the regional Corporate and Investment Bank manager, overseeing China, Taiwan, Korea, Macau and Hong Kong. Back in Belgium he continued as the Relationship Banking manager, and subsequently was named the head of the Regional Offices, the last one being the province of West Flanders. 
    He then joined the subsidiary Fortis Lease Group as the CEO, which grew during those eight years to an operational local activity in 23 countries.He was called back to the bank to head the Global Commercial Banking as the CEO. When BNP Paribas bought the bank, he left, to buy his own company, a market leader in smoked fish that has been around since 1859. (This company is actually run by his two sons.) 
    When MeDirect Group received a Belgian banking licence, Philippe was invited to join as a Non Executive Director, and chairman of the Audit & Risk Committee. In the summer of 2018, the Belgian CEO had left and Philippe was invited to become the CEO and Executive Director of the Belgian MeDirect Bank SA.

  • Graham Jackson
    Group Chief Financial Officer

    Graham Jackson has over 25 years of international experience in financial services. After qualifying as a chartered accountant he joined Salomon Brothers’ London office in 1989 and held a number of finance roles of increasing responsibility covering proprietary trading, fixed income derivatives trading and private client wealth management. Graham relocated to New York with Citi in 2003 and held a number of senior finance roles including responsibility for the US loan origination, syndication and trading businesses and was promoted to Managing Director in 2009. He returned to London in 2011 as CFO of Religare Capital Markets, an emerging markets focused investment bank and has subsequently undertaken a number of interim consulting assignments.

  • Edward A. Jaccarini
    Group Chief Internal Audit Officer

    Edward Jaccarini held positions as CFO for the National Bank of Dubai – Investment Bank and for an equity derivatives boutique investment bank, Diwan Capital Limited. Both entities were based in Dubai and regulated by the Dubai Financial Services Authority. Before moving to Dubai, he was the Finance Officer for Bank of America Securities Limited, a London-based bank, and the Finance Director for 30 other Bank of America subsidiaries. Previously, Edward headed the Regulatory Reporting department for the Bank of America EMEA region. Earlier roles include Financial Controller at Credit Suisse Securities Limited, as well as roles within the Internal Audit departments at the London offices of Credit Suisse and the Bank of New York. For three years he served as SVP, responsible for Accounting Policies and Control, at Riyad Bank, Saudi Arabia. He is a Chartered Accountant (ICAEW) and obtained an MBA from the City University, London. He is also a qualified member of the Association of Corporate Treasurers.

  • Alex Konewko
    Group Chief Risk Officer

    Alex Konewko has been working in the financial services industry since 2002, joining HSBC Bank in the UK as an Executive Management Trainee, gaining management experience across consumer, corporate and wholesale banking. Since 2009, Alex held a number of senior risk management positions with HSBC Bank across both Retail and Wholesale Risk at a regional level covering Europe, the Middle East and Africa, specialising in credit risk management, risk governance, operational risk, regulatory reporting and compliance. Alex is an Associate of the Institute of Financial Services, he holds a BSc in Financial Services from the University of Manchester, and successfully completed the HSBC Aspiring Chief Risk Officer programme at Cambridge University Judge Business School in 2015. 

  • Henry C. Schmeltzer
    Director of Commercial Strategy & Head of Legal

    Henry Schmeltzer founded and managed the European ABS and Illiquid Credit structuring and execution businesses at UBS, including development of the synthetic ABS and ABS derivatives businesses, non-recourse senior funding structures and asset origination strategies and structures. Before joining UBS, he ran credit structuring and origination businesses at Swiss Re London, Merrill Lynch London and Lehman Brothers London and New York. Prior to becoming a banker, Henry was an attorney in New York, leaving the law firm Brown & Wood as a partner. He holds an MBA (Finance) from the New York University, a JD from the University of Chicago and an AB (magna cum laude) from the Woodrow Wilson School of Princeton University. He was awarded CFA designation and is a member of the bar of the State of New York.

  • Deo Catania
    Group Head - Operations

    Deo Catania joined Bank of Valletta in 1981 and worked in the bank`s retail network for a number of years. In 1994 he joined the Bank of Valletta's treasury team within the Financial Markets group, starting off at the trading level in the foreign exchange markets and bond trading desk. He was responsible for the management of various bank products including deposits and other associated products. Deo was appointed Head of Treasury at Bank of Valletta in 2005 and subsequently Executive Head. He represented Bank of Valletta in various banking related seminars and conferences. Deo joined Mediterranean Bank in 2009 as Head of Treasury with the specific task to set up the Treasury Dept. He was later appointed as Head of Operations in 2014 and subsequently Group Head of Operations in 2017 with the task to support all the MeDirect Bank`s operations in Malta and Belgium. He holds diplomas in Political Studies and Labour Studies from the University of Malta, an MBA and a diploma in Management Studies from Henley Management College UK, and is a member of the Chartered Management Institute UK.  

  • Lorraine Bonello Ghio
    Group Head - Administration and HR

    Lorraine Bonello Ghio began her career with Mid-Med Bank in 1989. After receiving her basic training across a number of the Bank’s departments, Lorraine was appointed PA to the general manager of MIMBOL (Mid-Med’s offshore subsidiary), a position she held until 1996. Moving to a Legal and Financial Services practice, Lorraine developed her role as PA to the Managing Partner through assuming responsibility for the broader Administration and Human Resources functions. Attracted to the challenges of a start-up business, Lorraine joined MeDirect in its formative stage in 2006, primarily in the role of PA to the CEO, but with involvement across all the support functions of the bank. With the purchase and recapitalisation of the bank in 2009, she was appointed Head of Administration and Human Resources, a role she has remained in through the banks' rapid growth. Lorraine is CertCIB qualified, and holds a diploma in Business Administration and Human Resources. 

  • Walance Buttigieg Scicluna
    Group Head - Treasury

    Walance Buttigieg Scicluna has more than 15 years’ experience in the financial sector. In 2009 he became Deputy Senior Dealer in the Investments and Reserves section at the Central Bank of Malta, where he was responsible for the Fixed Income desk managing the Banks’ multi-currency bond portfolios. Walance was also responsible for the management of the foreign reserves on behalf of the European Central Bank in conjunction with another Euro system member. He was a member of various technical groups that focused on areas such as portfolio construction, benchmarking and hedging with recommendations presented to the Investment Policy Committee chaired by the Governor. Aside from ad hoc presentations he monthly reported and recommended to the Investment Policy Committee. He also lectured part-time at the University of Malta and the Institute of Financial Services. Walance holds a B.Com. (Hons) in Banking and Finance, an MA in Economics, an MA in Business Ethics (with Distinction) from the University of Malta and an MSc in Finance (with Distinction) from Strathclyde Business School. 

  • Nicol La Ciura
    Group Head - Wealth Products
    Nicol La Ciura began her career in 2001 as a Financial Services Consultant in Italy, working with Accenture and Deloitte in Milan. In 2004 Nicol joined Barclays Capital in London as an Associate within the Derivative Specialist Programme, rising to the post of Vice President, Structured Capital Markets with responsibility for implementing tax-efficient strategies through structuring cross-border financial transactions. Since joining MeDirect in 2011, Nicol has supported the Bank’s online channels and trading platform. Nicol holds a Degree summa cum laude in Economics from Milan’s Bocconi University and a Masters in Finance from London Business School.
  • Alanbek Yussupov
    Group Head - Change and Technology

    Alanbek Yussupov worked in London at Merrill Lynch International as part of the Global Structured Finance and Global Principal Investments. He has been working at MeDirect since 2009, and is currently responsible for both the technology department and the business development function (i.e. strategic and regulatory change management). Alanbek holds a MBA degree in Banking and Finance from the Goizueta Business School of Emory University (USA).

  • Ray Calleja
    Head - Consumer Banking

    Ray Calleja started his career in 1978 by joining Mid-Med Bank, which was taken over by HSBC in 1999. He occupied various managerial roles within Mid-Med Bank and HSBC, including in the Debt Recoveries and Factoring departments. He also worked as a Premier Relationship Manager and later as a Senior Premier Relationship Manager managing a small team of relationship managers looking after a portfolio of high net worth customers and providing priority service to HSBC's best customers. He moved to Credit Europe Bank NV, Malta Branch in November 2007 to lead the Retail Banking Unit, where he successfully helped setting up the Malta operations, thus opening the local market to savings and fixed term deposit accounts offering. Ray has an honors degree in Financial Services from the University of Manchester and is an Associate of the Institute of Financial Services. 

  • Charles Cini
    Head - Corporate Banking

    Charles Cini started his career when he joined Bank of Valletta in 1983, largely in the retail network. In 1991 he joined Lombard Bank Malta where he was mainly involved in Credit and Treasury, at both retail and head office levels. After five years he took up a senior management role with Midland Bank, where he was responsible for successfully setting up the bank’s corporate banking as well as treasury operations teams. Midland Bank was already part of the HSBC group and when HSBC took over Mid-Med Bank in 1999, Charles was seconded to HSBC Bank Malta as a senior manager within the bank’s Head Office Credit function. During the period with HSBC Bank Malta, Charles occupied various managerial roles including that of Senior Corporate Banking Manager, handling some of the largest credit relationships in Malta as well as that of Senior International Banking Manager, covering relationships with foreign companies and financial institutions using Malta as a base for their operations. He moved to MeDirect in August 2010 to head the Corporate Banking Unit and was appointed Chief Executive Officer of Mediterranean Corporate Bank following the acquisition and rebranding of Volksbank Malta in 2014. Charles is an Associate of the Institute of Financial Services.
