How scammers try to steal your card details

In our previous article on using bank cards safely we provided some tips on how to protect your card’s details when shopping online or in stores. In this article, we’ll be going through some of the popular tactics scammers use to try to get hold of these details even when you are not shopping.

Phishing

We’ve often referred to the risks of phishing when discussing using our online platform safely. And it’s a risk you also need to be aware of when it comes to using cards. Whenever you receive communications by email, SMS or via a phone call, that you were not expecting and, in particular, when this communication pressures you to act quickly, take a step back and think before you do anything. If you have any doubts, contact us using a channel you are familiar with and know is safe. In other words, do not reply directly.

Using your information against you

Phishing for card details gets more sophisticated with every passing month and criminals are well equipped to monitor your social media activity to better understand financial or other challenges you might be facing in life. Unsolicited calls offering services or products that are solutions to these challenges are a big red flag. Do not give your card details to anyone over the phone or by email, no matter how enticing the offer may sound.

Fake ecommerce sites

Fake ecommerce sites are another popular method which scammers use to try and steal your card details. These sites are very well produced and, at first glance, hard to differentiate from legitimate sites. But there are things you can look out for. Firstly, make sure to read the website address, in the top of your browser carefully. Does the domain perfectly match the name of the store or brand? And does it encrypt user data through an SSL certificate, identified through the lock symbol and ‘https:’ at the start of the URL?

Skimming

With skimming, scammers don’t trick you into giving away your card details. Instead, they install devices on card readers that simply copy your details when you swipe your card. While it can be hard to spot card readers or ATMs that have had skimming devices installed, you can still take steps to protect yourself. Keep an eye out for anything untoward on the card reader you’re using and make sure to use ATMs that are in busy areas with lots of CCTV coverage as this makes them less likely to be tampered with by criminals.

Unsecured Wi-Fi

The final scam for you to watch out for is the use of unsecured Wi-Fi networks to steal your card details. If you use such a network for a transaction, it’s relatively easy for scammers to intercept your communication. Simply never use an unsecured Wi-Fi network to make an online purchase.
