How to keep your Debit Card details safe and secure

At MeDirect Bank, we prioritise your financial security. With our latest updates to both physical and virtual debit cards, it’s now easier than ever to safeguard your account. These enhancements, such as custom spending limits and geographical access controls, put you in control of how and where your card is used.

Here are some essential tips to ensure your card details remain safe and secure:

Set Spending Limits

Take advantage of our new feature allowing you to set spending limits for in-store and online payments, as well as ATM withdrawals. This not only helps you manage your budget but also adds an extra layer of security by limiting the amount that can be spent if your card details are compromised.

Control Where Your Card Works

Our cards now offer the ability to block payments in specific geographical regions. If you’re not planning to travel, consider blocking transactions in regions where you don’t usually make purchases. This can prevent unauthorised transactions from occurring in those areas.

Monitor Transactions Regularly

Regularly check your account statements and transaction history. Promptly report any suspicious activity to our customer service team. Early detection of unauthorised transactions can prevent further misuse of your card.

Use Secure Internet Connections

Avoid using public Wi-Fi networks when making online purchases or accessing your bank account. Public networks can be less secure and more susceptible to hacking. Instead, use a secure, private connection to ensure your data remains protected.

Keep Your Card Details Confidential

Never share your debit card details, PIN, or CVV number with anyone. Be cautious of phishing scams and unsolicited requests for your card information. MeDirect Bank will never ask for your sensitive information via email or phone.

Use Virtual Cards for Online Shopping

Consider using virtual cards for online purchases. Virtual cards generate a unique card number for each transaction, adding an extra layer of security and reducing the risk of your actual card details being compromised.

Act Promptly in case of Loss or Fraud

If you lose your card or suspect it has been compromised, act immediately. You can immediately freeze your card via our mobile app or online banking by navigating to the ‘Cards’ section and selecting ‘Freeze’. You also have the option to report a lost or stolen card directly through the platform.

If you suspect fraudulent activity, you can temporarily block your account using the ‘Report Fraud’ feature located in the ‘More’ menu of our app or website. Further information on account safety can be found on our dedicated Security Awareness page, accessible at https://www.medirect.com.mt/security-awareness/

By following these tips and utilising the new features available on your MeDirect debit cards, you can enhance the security of your details and enjoy peace of mind. Stay vigilant and proactive in protecting your financial information.

MeDirect launches enhanced Debit Card security features

MeDirect Bank has launched a new set of security features for its debit card customers, reinforcing the Bank’s commitment to safeguarding client finances through smart, flexible, and user-driven solutions.

The latest updates introduce advanced controls that allow customers to manage their spending limits, block card usage in specific regions, and enable or disable online transactions. All these features are accessible via the MeDirect mobile app or internet banking platform.

“These new functionalities reflect our ongoing efforts to enhance customer protection while offering greater control and personalisation,” said Ingrid Micallef, Head of Wealth at MeDirect. “With these tools, customers can proactively manage when, where, and how their card is used, adding an important layer of security in today’s fast-moving digital environment.”

With the new features, customers can now set custom daily, weekly, or monthly limits on card spending and ATM withdrawals.  Additionally, with geographical access management, users can restrict card usage to specific regions. By default, cards are enabled globally but users can activate or block access in different global regions, except Europe, as needed. Customers can also block or unblock the ability to make online purchases. If disabled, any online transaction attempts using the debit card will be automatically declined until re-enabled by the customer through secure authentication.

“MeDirect continues to put in place the necessary safeguards to ensure our customers are protected. In addition, customers should also continue to keep in mind the actions they can take to keep their card and account information safe,” said Micallef. “This includes regularly monitoring account activity, using private, secure networks when banking online, never sharing card credentials or PINs, and acting immediately in case of suspected fraud, using the tools available in our app such as ‘Freeze Card’ and ‘Report Fraud’.”
