medirectalk featuring Terry Smith – Fundsmith LLP

On Thursday 28th March 2019, MeDirect held its first edition of medirectalk, a series of seminars featuring several financial experts and asset managers on market and investment opportunities. The first medirectalk – held at AX The Palace, Sliema – featured Terry Smith, the portfolio manager of Fundsmith LLP.

The event began with an opening speech by Wilfred Mallia, one of the founders of Charts – a local stockbroking, wealth management and corporate advisory firm – which merged with MeDirect in 2018. Wilfred mentioned one of the key moments that led to Terry Smith’s rise in popularity. In 1992, Terry Smith was dismissed from his position as the Head of UK Company Research at UBS Phillips & Drew, following the publication of his best selling book Accounting for Growth. Though some would see this as a controversial move, it helped the book soar to the top of the bestseller charts, eventually selling over 100,000 copies.

Founded in 2010, the Fundsmith Equity Fund is one of the most popular and successful funds investing in global equity, as it currently holds about £17bn assets under management. The company has also been able to deliver double digit returns through a clearly defined and simple investment philosophy. The fund is distributed locally through the MeDirect branch network, and available on our MeDirect online platform.

During his speech, Terry Smith spoke about the investment strategy that the company has adopted when selecting which companies to invest in, and explained more about how the fund has been able to continue growing at the rate that it has already been for the past ten years. The talk was followed by a question and answer session, where Terry Smith answered questions that the 150 people in attendance submitted. Drinks and canapés were served to conclude the evening.

Malta vs Croatia – Rugby European Championship 2019

On Saturday 13th April, Malta will be playing against Croatia in the Rugby European Championship at the Hibernians Stadium, with kick-off happening at 14:00.

Currently, Malta and Croatia hold the first and second places in the European Championship respectively, with both teams having won all three of their matches so far. During the championship, Malta has beaten Cyprus (10-37), Bosnia & Herzegovina (41-7), and Israel (14-21), and Croatia has beaten Israel (19-16), Cyprus (46-24) and Bosnia & Herzegovina (11-40). Both teams are heading into this game hungry to win the top table spot for themselves.

Since 2016, Malta and Croatia have competed against each other twice. On the 29th April 2017, both teams played against each other in Zagreb, Croatia, with the game ending in a draw (14-14). Malta then beat Croatia on the 4th November 2017 in Kordin, Malta (56-8). With one win and one draw, this upcoming match will determine whether Malta will remain on top.

MeDirect has been proudly supporting the Malta Rugby Football Union for the past nine years. Supporting the Maltese community has always been a priority for the Bank and will continue to be so in the coming years. We wish the national team good luck with their upcoming match.

A brief account of the Otters Club set up

The Otters Club hails from Marsalforn Bay in Gozo and was formed in 1971. For the first ten years of its history, the club participated in the competitions organised by the Gozo Aquatic Association. However with the number of Gozitan teams dwindling, in the early eighties the club joined the Aquatic Swimming Association (ASA) of Malta and began playing in the national competitions, something it has proudly done since, year in year out. This achievement is unrivalled by any other Gozitan association or club in any sporting discipline.

Currently, Otters participate in both the winter and summer national competitions with the Senior team, an Under 15 and an Under 13 team. This is no mean feat especially when one considers that to date, there is no adequate pool in Gozo where training can be held all year round! Recently, Anthony Farrugia, Assistant Coach of the Maltese National Waterpolo team, was engaged by the club to coach the Senior team, so that Otters’ senior players shall be prepared on a more professional basis.

The Otters Committee prides itself in raising players through its nursery and youth systems. During the summer months, a Swimming and Waterpolo School is held at the Otters pitch in Marsalforn. Around 140 girls and boys aged from 6 to 11 turn the Otters club into a hive of unbelievable activity. The club’s coaches have to utilise all their skills in order to cope, considering that the access to the sea is not ideal and that the weather plays an important part to having an adequate workout.

However, this structure has reaped precious dividends; in 2017, goalkeeper Matthew Xerri was chosen for the Under 17 National team competing in the European championship, and in 2018 Isaac Azzopardi and Luigi Dimech formed part of the Malta Under 13 National Team which played in a tournament in Italy. These selections confirm that the club’s structure is on the right track and motivate all members to give their very best for the improvement in the standards of waterpolo and swimming in Gozo.

MeDirect has been proudly supporting the Otters Club since the Bank opened its Gozo branch in 2012. Supporting the Gozitan community continues to be a priority for the Bank. We wish the Club and their team members good luck with any upcoming tournaments.
